Tate & Lyle and Kellogg's offer free online course on the benefits of dietary fiber

The digital course "Dietary fibers: benefits that go beyond gut health" shares the latest science on dietary fibers with health professionals in Latin America

Tate & Lyle PLC (Tate & Lyle), a leading global provider of food and beverage ingredients and solutions, has joined forces with Kellogg's Institute of Nutrition and Health (INSK) to share the latest science on dietary fibers with physicians, nutritionists and food and beverage industry professionals in Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Argentina and Costa Rica.

Research indicates that Latin American consumers do not get enough fiber in their diet, and many are unaware of the health benefits of dietary fibers, which go beyond gut health. The average fiber consumption among Latin Americans can be less than 15 grams per day, while recommendations for adults range from 25 grams to 40 grams per day.

Health benefits beyond the gut

Following a similar program launched by Tate &Lyle in Brazil last year, which attracted more than 6,000 participants, Tate &Lyle and Kellogg are building on that success by offering an expanded online curriculum titled "Dietary Fibers: Benefits That Go Beyond Internecine Health."

The program, which will be available from August 16 to December 31, 2021, includes 12 video lessons of 20 minutes each in Spanish and are led by nutrition experts and food scientists from different Latin American countries, covering a wide range of fiber-related topics, including:

  • Current recommendations and consumption of dietary fiber in the Latin American region;

  • Gut health and fiber connection, including links to prebiotics, microbiota and immunity;

  • Benefits of fiber during childhood and healthy aging;

  • Dietary fibers and body weight, glycemic response, bone and cardiovascular health;

  • Emerging science: the impact of fiber on the gut-brain axis.

A flexible program

The online platform offers healthcare professionals the flexibility to move at their own pace and prioritize the most beneficial lessons for their ongoing learning and practices.

"Fiber has many health benefits beyond a healthy gut: consuming a sufficient amount of fiber is associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and bowel cancer. It supports the normal functioning of the body's immune system and has even been linked to a positive impact on mood and emotional well-being," said Renata Cassar, senior nutrition manager at Tate &Lyle, Latin America. "We are proud to share our latest science and understanding of fiber with other health professionals in the region – our purpose is to Improve Lives for Generations and we hope attendees will finish the course with a better understanding and confidence that fiber can contribute to a healthier and more balanced diet."

"Nutrition is part of Kellogg's DNA; we are passionate about supporting the continuing education of health professionals on relevant topics such as the impact of dietary fiber on the gut microbiota or the role of fiber in trending diets such as the Mediterranean, ketogenic, and FODMAP. Fiber consumption in Latin American countries is often insufficient and we want to make a difference," said Elisa Gomez Reyes, INSK leader at Kellogg.
