Samyog Health Foods was established in 2020 with a focus on plant-based proteins. It was created keeping in mind the need to support every individual's nutritional needs.
According to Devendra Chawla, founder, Samyog Health Foods, two major shifts are happening with respect to protein in the food system. He explains, “The first is from animal-based proteins to plant-based proteins. Animal agriculture is one of the significant drivers of creating food insecurity and an unsustainable food system. Now, there are technological capabilities to produce foods like meat and dairy from plant-based sources instead of conventional animal sources. We have established an R&D facility to research in this space.”
“The second shift, a necessary one, is the carbohydrate-to-protein switch. In line with this, we have launched our first brand, Prolicious, that focuses on helping people get protein through the day.”
He believes that eating more protein helps alleviate problems like weight management, diabetes, PCOS, and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by giving the body the nutrition it needs.
Chawla mentions that by effecting these lifestyle changes and seamlessly integrating an improved diet in people’s routines, the company aims to transform the food sector in India and help build healthier communities. He adds, “Prolicious sits at the intersection of taste and health. We take tasty, everyday foods that Indians love eating and make them high in protein. This helps people enjoy the foods they love without the guilt and meet their health goals.”
Currently, the company’s product portfolio comprises Ready-to-Eat (RTE) and Ready-to-Cook (RTC) foods such as thins, khakhras, pastas, noodles, breakfast mixes like chilla, pancakes and millet dosa.
Spreading the concept of “Protein through the day”
Chawla states that they are focused on the concept of ‘Protein through the day’. He explains, “To achieve this goal, we are working on a range of RTC and RTE products with specific benefits based on consumption. For instance, people have busy mornings, so we design all our breakfast items in easy, quick cooking formats that can be made in less than fifteen minutes. We have launched high protein oats chilla, millet dosa and pancake mixes in this category.”
Taking cognizance of consumer requirements for snacks that are convenient to take on the go, Prolicious claims to be the first company to put a zip on a vacuum pack. This provided an easy way to carry its khakhras and thins while traveling.
A myriad of options for those experimenting in the kitchen
Prolicious also caters to consumers who love experimenting in the kitchen. Chawla elaborates, “Prolicious is working to make tasty high protein solutions to meet these needs. Our first foods in this category are high protein Pasta, Hakka Noodles and Vermicelli. We also make variants for special dietary needs like salt-free and gluten-free.”
R&D and innovation
Chawla informed us that Prolicious has a great and growing internal team of food scientists and nutritionists. It also has an integrated lab focusing on end-to-end R&D from base protein ingredients to end formulation. He adds, “We have the equipment and capability to develop high protein foods and plant-based dairy, meat and egg foods. We align our R&D with consumer insights and trends, encouraging our scientists to leave the lab and survey customers to understand their needs and desires.”

The Prolicious team is excited to participate in the upcoming trade show ANUFOOD and display its range of products for visitors. Elaborating further, Chawla says, “We will display our easy-to-make quick-cooking breakfast options, tasty snacks, and pasta for meals. We will also be showcasing some of the products we have in R&D, which people will get to see for the first time.”
Commenting on their participation in ANUFOOD India, Chawla remarks, “Platforms like ANUFOOD help bring the industry stakeholders together to exchange knowledge, spur innovation and grow as a sector. It also helps with keeping abreast of the latest trends in the space. We look forward to interacting with industry members and making the right connections to grow our business.”
He adds that Prolicious is currently working to build its distribution in India and abroad. At the event, the team hopes to meet people who believe in its vision and would like to help get tasty high-protein foods to their consumers.
